Looking Back

Last time I was in California, I had the opportunity to go through some of my grandparent's old photos. There were a ton- and I fell in love with each and every one of them. What amazing photos! I spent hours sprawled on the floor going through box after box of scattered photos and memories. I left most of them behind for my brother and dad, but I took some of my favorites back with me.

I only wish I had found and asked about these photos while they were still with us. If your grandparent's/ parents are still with you- do it. What do you have to lose? I would have loved to hear the stories behind each moment captured. The two below of my Papa and Grandma Chicken are both framed and hanging in our house now.

My papa standing in front of the tents he was living in while on location. My grandma's passport photo.

I've sent these photos to my Aunt Mieko (my grandma's sister) because I'm curious if this is a family photo of my grandmother's brother and sisters. The woman on the very right looks like my great aunt and the woman sitting front and center is my grandma.

I love the mix of cultures here. The boy in his cowboy hat- and my dad in his kimono.

My grandparents were amazing with animals. Here my Grandma Chicken is giving a treat to her dachshund who is "sitting pretty". She taught Maverick to do the same.

I have no idea who the other people are in this photo. But I love this picture of them at a party while stationed in Germany.

With my dad while stationed in Hawaii.

Me and my hero back in '88.

And a more recent holiday. I miss them...

  5. Thanks ladies! Like you said Ash, it's so awesome to see photos of your family members as "young, awesome adults". I think it especially has to do with the fact that you've only known them to look a certain way

  7. I love photos, but especially old photos, & of course the stories behind them. Nowadays we can take photos anywhere, anytime. But back then (heck, back when I was a little kid even!) they were more special because they werent cheap & easy to come by.

  8. These pictures are incredible! I've been following you since you were a weddingbee and cried over your post back then about dancing with your grandfather because it's the same way I feel about mine. I'm lucky to still have my pap around, and actually had him write down his life story for me last year. Thank you for this awesome reminder to cherish the people we love the most while we can :)

  9. These are great photos! I should share a few I have from my grandmother's house. I spent some time sorting them after her funeral last month. She had some wonderful old photos. Thankfully, my mom knows who most of the people are, and could tell me a lot about them. It's looking through these memories that keeps me inspired to print and keep the photos I take of our own family and adventures--I hope future generations of my family will enjoy them too. Thanks for sharing.

  10. What a beautiful & handsome pair :) I can do this for hours when I'm back home. I know it sounds silly, but sometimes I 'forget' that our older generations had lives before we came in the picture; they dated, first kisses, pretty much experienced everything that we have already at some point, huh? Thanks for sharing these. :)

Diane- I totally agree. Especially since digital came out- we're picture crazy now... especially me

Bekka- Thanks for following me over and what an incredibly great idea. I wish I had done the same- I can't even imagine how much you must treasure that

nodakademic- I'm so sorry to hear about your grandmother and the pain you must be feeling. I'll be praying for strength for you and your family. And keep taking those photos :)

Anabel- I totally agree- which I think is part of the allure when looking back at them
